Why Does the Korean Internet Find LG Electronics So Funny?
From LG gram and Styler to StanbyME and smartphones, what made the Korean internet chuckle at LG Electronics?

There is an old joke about LG Electronics on the Korean internet. The company seems to make products very seriously, but some of its moves feel so unexpected that people find them funny.
It’s Funny Without Trying to Be
In Korean, a meme is a joke, turn of phrase, image, or story that people repeat online. Some memes are created to make fun of someone. Others emerge when something is so strange that people cannot stop talking about it.
The LG Electronics meme is closer to the second kind. On the Korean internet, LG Electronics is sometimes described as this kind of company.
“It takes its products seriously, but somehow, the things it does are funny.”
Here, “funny” does not necessarily mean ridicule. When someone behaves a little differently from what you expect, Korean has the expression pisik ut-da (피식 웃다), meaning “to let out a quiet chuckle.” It is not a big laugh, just a small one to yourself.
The same is true of stories about LG Electronics. From its products and marketing to new experiments and its mobile phone business, these little chuckles appear again and again.
“Why Are We Doing Their Marketing for Them?”
One example often comes up when people explain the LG Electronics meme: a Twitter account called “LG, We’ll Do the Marketing for You.”
According to a 2016 report, the account was run by an individual with no connection to LG Electronics. Its operator used it to share information about products that LG itself had not done much to promote. Articles at the time also noted that LG Electronics’ marketing had long been a topic of conversation among Korean internet users.
The reason this situation was a little funny is simple. Normally, a company promotes its products to consumers. The company says, “This is why our product is good,” and consumers decide whether to buy it.
In this meme, however, the direction is reversed. It is as though the consumer is saying this to the company.
“Wait, why aren’t you advertising something this good? Do I have to do it for you?”
This joke does not prove that LG Electronics is always bad at marketing. What matters is how people reacted. Some internet users looked at LG and wondered, “Why is it so quiet?” That frustration became a meme.
It Said 980 Grams. It Was Even Lighter.
The product that captures this meme best is the LG gram.
In 2016, LG Electronics launched the 15.6-inch LG gram 15 and listed its weight as 980 grams. The official press release likewise said that despite its large 15.6-inch display, the laptop weighed just 980 grams.
At the launch event, however, one report said a journalist placed the device on a scale and got a reading of 953 grams—about 30 grams lighter than the official figure. An LG Electronics representative explained that differences in the paint used for each color could change the weight by a few grams, and that 980 grams was the maximum weight of any individual model in the gram series.
When people doubt an advertisement, they usually imagine the opposite: a product advertised as light turns out to be heavier in real life. This case was different. Judging from the report alone, the actual measurement made the product look better than the official number did.
That made people laugh. The reaction was essentially: “Most companies would be trying to make the product sound as good as possible. Why was LG being even more cautious?”
So the LG gram story is more than a tale about a laptop. On the Korean internet, it remains a defining scene in the joke about “a company that cannot even brag about itself.”
The Background: “For Appliances, It’s LG”
Another part of the background is the phrase “For appliances, it’s LG.” It is quite familiar in Korea. The saying reflects the sense that many people think of LG when it comes to long-lasting home appliances such as washing machines, refrigerators, and air conditioners.
Of course, not everyone in Korea agrees. Some people may prefer other brands. Still, LG Electronics is strongly associated with home appliances in Korea—enough for “For appliances, it’s LG” to sound like a familiar saying.
That background makes the LG Electronics meme even more peculiar. The joke is not that the company makes bad products. Many people acknowledge the quality of its products. The humor comes when what the company does next seems different from what they expected.
The company is serious about its products. Its marketing, however, seems strangely cautious.
The appliances are seen as dependable. Yet the company’s image can seem oddly unpolished.
That contrast is what becomes the meme.
From “Why Would Anyone Need This?” to “But I Kind of Want One”
LG Electronics sometimes releases products that feel a little unfamiliar at first glance. A leading example is the LG Styler.
The Styler is a clothing care appliance. It is not a washing machine, an iron, or a wardrobe. You hang clothes inside, and it helps reduce odors and wrinkles while keeping them looking neat.
At first, it raises a question: “Do I really need this?” But reactions changed over time. The LG Styler first launched in 2011, and reports in 2026 said its cumulative global sales had passed 2 million units. LG Electronics said it now sells the product in 27 countries.
The LG StanbyME is similar. Even its description sounds a little odd. It resembles a TV, but it is not a conventional TV. It resembles a tablet, but it is much larger. It has wheels, so you can move it around and watch it in different parts of the house.
LG Electronics introduced the StanbyME in 2021 as a “wireless private screen.” It sits on wheels, can run for up to three hours on its built-in battery without being plugged in, and lets users adjust the screen’s angle and height. During its first pre-order sale, all 200 units allocated to LG’s online brand shop sold out within an hour, and another 100 units offered on Coupang also sold out that day.
People’s reactions to both products follow a similar path.
First comes, “Why did they make this?” A little later, it becomes, “Actually, that could be convenient.” In the end, the reaction is, “It’s strange, but I want one.”
This is another part of the LG Electronics meme. It seemed strange enough to be funny, but then it turned out to be useful. The shift itself is part of the fun.
LG Kept Experimenting with Smartphones, Too
Finally, it is hard to leave out LG’s phones. LG Electronics tried several unusual ideas in mobile phones as well.
Unveiled in 2016, the LG G5 was a modular smartphone. Users could detach the lower battery section and attach devices such as a camera grip or an audio module. LG Electronics described it as the company’s first modular smartphone.
LG Electronics kept trying unusual phones after that. There was the LG Wing, whose screen rotated into a T shape, and at CES 2021 the company unveiled a rollable smartphone concept with an expanding display. LG described the rollable phone as an exploratory glimpse at the future of smartphones.
The problem was that these experiments did not translate into business success. In April 2021, LG Electronics announced that it would close its mobile phone business, with the wind-down scheduled to be completed by July 31 that year.
At the time, Reuters reported that LG smartphone fans lamented the loss of unusual designs such as its T-shaped dual-screen model. It also reported that LG’s smartphone business had been loss-making for nearly six years, with losses reaching about $4.5 billion.
That gives the story of LG phones a bittersweet kind of humor. LG did not simply stick to the ordinary. It really rotated screens, attached components, and tried to make displays expand. People looked at those ideas in amazement and thought, “They actually made this?”
But in the end, LG’s mobile phone business came to an end.
A Little Strange, and Fun Because of It
At the heart of the LG Electronics meme is a major contradiction.
LG Electronics does not seem to be trying to be funny. If anything, it takes its products seriously, is cautious even when stating a product’s weight, and releases products before people quite know what to make of them. In smartphones, it did not leave its unusual experiments in the realm of imagination. It turned them into real devices.
That seriousness is exactly what sometimes creates the humor. It is funny because it is so cautious, so experimental, and so earnest.
On the Korean internet, LG Electronics is not discussed simply as either “a good company” or “a failed company.” Sometimes it is a dependable appliance maker. Sometimes it is a company people want to advertise for. And sometimes it is a company that really makes products that leave people asking, “Why did they make this?”
A little strange, a little serious, and a little funny.
That is why stories about LG Electronics have stayed with the Korean internet for so long. Funny, isn’t it?
